The ideal place for sun tanning, relaxing and romantic evenings watching the sunset. The beach of Maleme is a part of the continuous beach of 16 kms from Chania city to Kolymbari village. It is one of the beaches of Municipality of Platanias which have been awarded with blue flag, the official certification for clean and safe coasts.
Part of the beach is well organized with sun beds and umbrellas and you can enjoy your swim comfortably and under the shadow. If you prefer quiet you can go to the other part which is not crowded. The plaz is half stone and half sand and the water is clear. Also, there is a lifeguard that watches over the beach during the day. In Maleme beach you can find hotels, appartments and studios for rent. Above the plaz there is an excellent pedestrian road where you can have a romantic and peaceful evening walk. Moreover, there are many sea view restaurants, tavernas and bars where you can have a lunch after your swim or a dinner watching the sunset. From the beach you can see Theodorou or Agioi Theodoroi Island. Theodorou is not inhabited and it is a preservation area of the Cretan wild goat (Kri Kri). Agioi Theodoroi and Samaria Gorge are natural preservation parks and the two last places that this spiece exists.

The Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded to approximately 3650 beaches and marinas in 46 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada and the Caribbean. The area of Chania has 25 beaches awarded with blue flag.The part of the continuous beach from Chania to Kolympari has been awarded with 9. Beaches are awarded the Blue Flag based on compliance with 32 criteria covering the following: 1) Environmental Education and Information, 2) Water Quality, 3) Environmental Management, 4) Safety and Services.
All Blue Flags are awarded for one season at a time.
